Few events are as nerve-racking and exciting as the first of one’s social life at university. Filled with intrigue and anticipation, Freshers mingled in their halls as move-in day came to a close and their first night at St Andrews was soon to begin. As night fell, large groups of first years made their way to the Union for the opening of the newly refurbished Club 601.
If The Bubble is any indication for what to expect for the rest of Freshers Week, first years are in great hands with the Union and have a memorable week ahead of them.
The club itself is impressive – a state-of-the-art bar lines the far right wall, where crowds of Freshers congregated. Within the first hour, a few of the boldest first years made their way onto the strobe-lit dance floor. The DJ booth hangs high on the back wall and last night the music featured throwback hits from the early 2000s – The Black Eyed Peas included. Despite the dance-hits, the majority of Freshers still hung by the bar, awkwardly swaying side-to-side with their drinks in hand, looking out onto the semi-empty dance-floor. As midnight grew closer, Freshers were finally starting to get comfortable and really dance. There was movement between the bar and the dance floor throughout the night, but past midnight few were still lining up for drinks and rather crowded under the DJ booth, with their hands up, dancing and jumping to the beat. The two areas of the club seemed to have done a swap – right from the entrance, late-arriving Freshers ran straight into the dancing crowd to join the party.

The entire building was bustling, with many first years venturing their way from the dance floor of 601 to the filled Main Bar, meeting older students and quickly being adopted by academic parents. Overall, the Union hosted a seamless and successful inaugural event. It is tough to organize an event where most of the students don’t know one another, but the Union created a warm atmosphere that sparked conversation and friendships to form. If The Bubble is any indication for what to expect for the rest of Freshers’ Week, first years are in great hands with the Union and have a memorable week ahead of them.
